Whitford Manor Estate construction underway

Whitford Manor Estate construction underway

Infrastructure construction for Whitford Manor Estate is now underway. A small team of Stewart & Cavalier engineers is based on site, installing the water treatment system, a technologically advanced German-engineered water treatment plant which will play an important part in making the estate environmentally sustainable.

Whitford Manor estate is designed to be predominantly self-sufficient. The Mena Water Reverse Osmosis (RO) system will provide a local and independent drinking water supply with automation to top up on-site resident-owned rainwater catchment tanks, and an independent Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant.

Whitford Manor Estate

Whitford Manor Estate is set in rolling hills

The estate will comprise 156 properties, a mix of terraced houses, stand-alone sections and luxury apartments, designed around landscaped grounds and communal facilities. Landscaping will complement the surrounding countryside whilst providing camouflage for infrastructure. It will incorporate boardwalks, ponds and mature trees to ensure there are abundant habitats for native species.

The Mena Water treatment system is a key component in ensuring the estate is almost entirely self-sufficient. It includes two elements:

  • A membrane bioreactor (MBR) plant to manage the wastewater requirements for the development.

  • A reverse osmosis plant to treat bore water. This will be used to top up the fresh water supply to the properties on the estate, should their individual rainwater tanks run low.

The wastewater tanks have been buried underground and the plant will be installed on top, keeping the footprint small. The MBR and the RO plants at Whitford Manor will be cleverly disguised by a pair of boathouses on the shore of stormwater overflow ponds. They will be a visually attractive feature of the subdivision.

MBR technology is cutting edge, transforming sewage to clear, safe output. Trials demonstrate that the MBR process produces effluent quality that meets and exceeds current EPA standards for release to sensitive waters. It’s environmentally sound with a small carbon footprint and is a first for New Zealand, ensuring the Whitford environment is protected and enhanced for future generations.
